DQ’d

The AquaMouse had her swim meet on Saturday. She swam in the medley, did her usual butterfly. Her split time was 29, a personal best  for her.

Then she waited for her next event, the 100 butterfly. Then she found out she was disqualified! Because she did not swim the 50 free, that she did not know she was supposed to swim!

They even got rid of her time in the medley, she said the next best time was 31.

Honey and I have one question. Why do they have to disqualify a swimmer for ALL of their events if they miss one?

We feel very sad for her. All along we have been telling her, go as far as she can go, ride it as long as she can, beat your own times. And she would have. She said they had “fast” water. She might have shaved seconds off her best Fly time.

She would not have advanced to states though. Her previous best Fly time was 1.08, and she said there were girls who were 58, 59. She would not have shaved that many seconds off. But still :(

Oh well. That’s it for this year, and she says she is not swimming next year. Not because she got DQ’d, she has been saying it all along. She says it is too much work, and she has no life. It IS a lot of work, and her social life IS severely curtailed. But she is an asset to her team. They are a better team for her participation, even if she is not their best swimmer.

But, I am going to work on her for the rest of the year. She still doesn’t know how far she can go. She still hasn’t ridden it as far as she can. We still don’t have those end of year final times. The ones in the “fast” water.

No matter what, we are so proud of that little Pool Rat.

Not Much Went As Planned

Remember on Tuesday, when I told you all about how we were going to spend Mousey’s 1/2 day off from school?

We were going to take her glasses to the mall to get them fixed, and have lunch at Sonic, then head over to Value World?

Well, two out of three ain’t bad. At least, that’s what Meatloaf says.

We looked high and low, over hill and dale, in every place we could possibly think of, but we could not find her broken glasses. Now, where could a pair of broken glasses get to? Hopefully they will turn up. Because I am NOT buying another pair right now. She has only had these since June, for goodness sake!  They have to be in our house. Somewhere.

Scratch number one.

Because we did not go to the mall to fix the glasses, we were not by the Sonic. So we still have not had the pleasure of the full Sonic Experience. Perhaps another day.

Scratch number two.

We did eat though. At Panera’s. Where my dining experience was NOT complete, because I did not have a bearclaw. Yes, a bearclaw is all I need to get by. You may be wondering why I did not have a bearclaw. I really don’t know why. Perhaps I was trying to give the false impression that I was adhering to my professed low carb lifestyle. No, that can’t be it, I did eat my bread. Can I just leave it at “I don’t know”?

On a bright note, we did make it to the Value World. Mousey found a whole cart full of stuff. I found 3 books; The Stand by Stephen King for $1.91, The Prophet by Frank Peretti for .80,  and I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron for $1.87, which I must say, looks hilarious. I am gathering that it is about the problems that occur in upper middle age women. I also bought a Willi Smith sweater and another sweater by FieldGear.  For $2.80 and $3.70. I find the Willi clothing is flattering for me. I don’t know what that says about Willi though.

What I really want to understand is the pricing. How do they decide their odd pricing? Is it totally random?

We had a very nice time, even though nothing turned out as we planned. And that, my Friends, is the story of our life.

Way Back When-sday-The Beginning of AquaMouse

Three year old Mousey at our neighborhood pool. She logged a lot of time on those steps.

IMG_0003 (11)

We loved the neighborhood pool so much, we put one in when we moved down the road to our newly built home in 1999.  It was GREAT for years! Now? Not so much. Honey just takes care of it, and no one really goes in it.

This must have been the summer before we moved in, because that is the temporary fence. I’m pretty sure this was the first time we ever swam in it. If you will notice, the small mouse hand pointing the #1 finger. The other kids were holding their fingers up.

IMG_0004 (12)

Here is Honey teaching 4 year old Mousey how to swim, without the floaties. She was fearless with them, and in about 15 minutes, was fearless without them.

IMG_0005 (11)

Ta-Da!

IMG_0007 (7)

She loved being thrown around. From an early age,  she was like a seal in the water.

IMG_0006 (7)

Or a sea monster.

I think that Way Back When-sday went swimmingly!

This and That

Our Halloween had several activities going on, but none of them were trick or treat related. Our children have reached the age where this is all but a non-holiday.

Evidently, so have the kids in our neighborhood. We had a grand total of 7 knocking on our door. Maybe our ugly yard scared them away.

Speaking of our ugly yard, the City Sewer Guy called yesterday afternoon to set up another meeting. It will be the week before Thanksgiving. Still praying for that end result.

I wasn’t going to make our traditional Halloween snacks, until The Boy said that they were the best thing about Halloween anymore. Well, how could I resist that? They are SO yummy. Just what Honey and I need. Extra snacks.

Thanks to LMNOP for taking the picture. I couldn’t get the flash to work and she is a professional. She also said that she knew  when she came in the house that the plate of cookies was staged for the blob. She’s like a little baby genius.

011

I have been knitting a lot. Halle Berry enjoys napping in the nest-O-scarves.

The AquaMouse was in fine form on Saturday. Her team had their Division meet and they came in first place! She swam 3 events. A 200 medley relay with 3 other girls (her leg was the butterfly), and individual 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Her times in the  medley and the Fly qualified her for the Conference meet. Don’t I sound like I know what I’m talking about? I’m totally copying off the schedule paper.

What I do know is, if she does well at this next event, she qualifies for the State Finals! And that would be nothing short of AMAZING!!!! Imagine, our Baby Mouse swimming with the big fish!

She doesn’t think she will qualify, but she didn’t think she would make it this far. We are just so proud of that Fly Girl!

022

This is her cute little stance. She always does it. The other swimmer is getting near her. She is getting READY to dive in!

032

Off she goes! She’s a beast.

Today is that funky election day, so our high schoolers have no school. Mouse said last night that she heard it was because the voters were scared of the highschoolers. When did adults get so wimpy?

As a happy result, The Mouse and I are spending a half day together. She needs to go to the mall to have her glasses fixed. The arm fell off, and I cannot do my usual trick of jamming a toothpick in the hole to extend it’s life. The hole is too small. In all of my 35 years of wearing glasses, I have never encountered this phenomenon. I should have copyrighted it while I had the chance.

Since we will be in the area, a trip to the Value World will be in order. That ought to make her the happiest Mouse in the land.

AND, when Mrs. Schmenkman was here, and we were spending all that quality time together with the other Capri’s, we heard from Capri Patt that there was a new Sonic that had opened where there used to be a Denny’s. And it is RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO THE MALL. I have read many blogs telling of the unimaginable delight that is the Sonic.

I have been to Sonic exactly twice. Once, years ago with my family in Orlando, where they had ice cream, and where I did not, because I was actually embracing my low carb life style  in the correct way. The second time, was when Schmenky was here 2 weeks ago. Capri Patt and The Ab-Cat had ice cream, Schmenk ordered a  sugarfree limeade, that the worker girl did EVERYTHING in her power to switch to a CHERRY limeade, and I had a Diet Coke. With ice. That is one of the things that I have heard ya’ll waxing so poetic about. Supposedly, the ice at Sonic has magical properties.

It was a very good Diet Coke, but I don’t know about all that magical stuff.

All that to say, I have not eaten their food. So, perhaps today, Mousey and I will partake of the food. If we do, I will surely let you know. But I have to tell you right up front. Food is food to me. This annoys Honey to no end. He likes to think about food, and talk about food, and talk about how to prepare food. I could either enjoy a yummy meal or have a bowl of Cheerios. It’s all the same to me. I’m just meeting a need. The need of satisfying hunger.

Hope you all have a Tom Terrific Tuesday. Who was Tom Terrific anyway? I forget.

Happy Halloween!

Scenes from Halloween ‘01.

A groovy, peace and love, Ab-Cat. Dumping the candy bucket. Let the trading begin! I SO remember doing that with Beeve. We were all about the gum. My Mother was all about the candy bars.

IMG (36)

Miss Mouse was her old standby. A cat. I think her collar said Frisky. The Boy was a doctor. But he couldn’t just be a regular doctor. That would be boring.

IMG_0001 (14)

He was Dr. Zaius from The Planet of the Apes. Ah, those were the days!

IMG_0002 (13)

Way Back When-sday-Pumpkins

This was Once Upon A Time when we used to carve pumpkins. The last couple of years, they just sat out on the porch looking natural. Then I would throw them out into the field as a special treat for our pets, the groundhogs. Or whistlepigs, as I learned from Capri Patt last week. I am an absorbant sponge of information.

IMG_0004 (6)

This was the year of Harry Potter for The Ab-Cat. She went as Hermoine herself . Her love for all things Harry was at its highest point that year, although she remained a Potter-head for several more. My best guess was she was in 7th grade.

IMG (19)

I’m not sure about the look The Boy was going for this year, but he had been all about the knives and swords since he was about 3. He was probably Albert Einstein that year. He was also in an Albert Einstein phase for quite a while. If my best guess was correct above, He was in the 5th grade.

IMG_0005 (5)

No surprise here, Our Mousey was a kitty-cat for the majority of her Halloween outings. Actually, when she was 2 and 3 and 4, she probably had her cat costume on 4 or 5 times a week. Everwhere she went. Yes, that was us at Meijers. This is 2nd grade Mouselina.

I heart these Precious Pumpkins!

The Mouse Roars Back

I believe I mentioned that Mousey had a wee bit of trouble at the last swim meet. Not game. I stand corrected. By Jip the Farm Dog, who is aware of all things sporty.

I am here to tell you that she suffered no long term damage from her bout with disqualification and goggle flippage. She sliced through the water last night with the speed and determination of a dolphin, or an orca, or some other really fast underwater creature. Or a 10th grade girl.

She had told me the day before that there had been a change to the schedule. She was going to get to swim the butterfly on the A Team relay, instead of her normal B Team. Some of these A team-ers are good. Some have their name on the wall of the high school pool. They are record holding good.

Of course, I entertained  brief visions of her glory. What if they broke a new record and their names were put on the record wall?? Naturally, she rolled her eyes at me. Because she is a 15 year old 10th grader. And that is her job.

Honey and I arrived at the meet at approximately 6:33. Evidently, the meet started promptly at 6: 29. Because the other team’s coach is known for being a Mr. Annoying Pre-Prompt type. In our defense, we left in plenty of time to arrive pre-promptly, but did not account for an untimely road closure, and the other school was having a football game. So you can just imagine the plentiful parking spaces available.

One small aside, all of the arrows in their parking lot went one way. How can that be? Seriously, HOW CAN THAT BE??? Honey got creative with the parking.

So after paying our $5 per person admittance fee, having the back of our hands stamped with some dumb ink that will make it look like we went to a bar last night, and racing up the 2 flights of stairs to get to the most inaccessible viewing stand we have ever made the acquaintance of, it was 6:33. And we had already missed her swimming with the A Team.

But we didn’t know it at the time. Ignorance was bliss in that instance.

We saw her swim the 100 butterfly, in which she placed a respectable 3rd, and swim in another relay, which I think they placed 3rd as well. We can’t be sure though. The screen inexplicably said 0, which led Honey and I to wrongly believe they had been disqualified. We then noticed that in every heat afterward that that lane always said 0. I find it hard to believe that every event in that lane was disqualified. I’m sure they explained it in the talking part of the show, but I don’t always listen to that for 3 reasons.

1. They talk so much, that I don’t pay attention.

2. Sometimes, the voice sounds like the teacher in the Charlie Brown specials; mwa mwa muahwa mwamb.

3. Honey and I miss what they are saying because we are looking at each other asking, “what did he just say?” It can be very confusing.

We were watching our Pool Mouse very carefully throughout the meet, looking for signs of stress. There were none. As a matter of fact, she appeared highly animated, and exceedingly cheerful. Thank you Lord!

They won the meet by a landslide and we all went home.

We found out later that they placed 1st in the A Team event! WOO HOO! But, they broke no new school record,  her name will not be on the wall. AND, they were disqualified because of a reason that I can’t remember, one that her coach said was the worst call he had seen in his life, or all year, or that night. Something like that.

Best news of the night? She was not the cause of the disqualification!!!!! Wooty Woo to the Hoo!!!!

Another small aside, because I am confident that you all are dying to know. The bleachers? Not my favorites. They were wooden seats, which I DO like, but the spacing was weird and I was alarmed that I would fall. They were not open underneath, but I couldn’t get over the spacing. Thank you very much.

Way Back When-sday-Fall With Ab-Cat and Mousey

It’s looking fall-ish up here in The Mitten. Nippy temperatures and changing leaves. Always one of the very best parts of living in Michigan.

Here we are way back in the fall of 1996. This is at our old house.  Two year old Mousey was enchanted with throwing leaves this particular year.

It looks like Honey is strapping the 7 year old Ab-Cat into her RGO walking braces. I see her little walker in the top right corner.

Like I said, Muggins was all about the leaf lobbing.

IMG_0005 (8)

Get er!

IMG_0006 (4)

There is our old house. There have been 3 or 4 families living there since we left, and no one has ever painted over the country blue that we applied 20 years ago! It is right down the road and we drive past it many times a week. We used to always say “Hi, old house!”

IMG_0004 (9)

Abby was such a good big sister!

IMG_0003 (8)

This is my favorite, she is giving her a smooch!

Thanks for rolling around in the leaves with us Way Back When!

Is fall visiting your neck of the woods?

Breathing is a Good Thing, But it was All a Little Much

009

I did not realize that I had left so many of you hanging with my little comment about Mousey’s swim meet going south. I sincerely  apologize.

The meet started out fraught with troubles. They had trouble with the sound system, then they had trouble with the thing that records time. Which, I don’t need to tell you, is mondo important. As a result of that, they kept blaring the annoying start “honk”, trying to get it fixed. Finally, they started.

Mouse was in the first relay, doing her thing, The Fly. They came in third, which I learned later that evening, counts for points. I am a sponge for knowledge.

Her next event was the 100 Fly, alone. After she jumped off the podium (Help me out there Jip), the very first time she surfaced, her goggles flipped back over her head. They did not completely flip off  her head because, as I also learned that evening, the other part of the strap is under the always attractive bathing cap. To prevent just such a tragedy.

She tried to put them back on and continue, but every time she surfaced, they flipped back. She finally just left them off and swam. And promptly ran into the side wall. When she made her turn, Honey and I were shocked to see that she was not that far behind the pack! She tried valiantly to catch up, but evidently, those goggles are important. She fell further behind. But, she finished! And, in something we laughed about later, SHE DID NOT LOSE! She could NOT believe that she came in 5 th out of 6 th. A moment of silence for the 6 th place girl. Bless her heart, real good.

Honey caught it all on film!  For posterity. For all time.

We were watching her like a hawk after that heat. Because we know our Mousey-Girl, and quick recovery is not her strong suit.

Sure enough, she was in distress. But I was proud to see that she was trying to manage it. She then turned into the locker room. I thought that she had probably not been able to avoid the ugly cry, and removed herself from public.

Since I was selling water on the sidelines, and Honey was sitting next to me, because we are married and we  do everything together, I saw one of the girls run up to the assistant coach and watched them both go into the locker room. Honey and I just looked at each other.

Then another swimmy friend ran up to us and said that our little Muggins Q. Mouse was having trouble breathing. That was a long walk, trying to hurry, but not wanting to wipe out on the wet tile. Because, you never know, Honey could have caught that little maneuver on film. For posterity. For all time.

When I got in there, I could tell that she was breathing way too much, way too hard. Since she is not asthmatic, I was pretty sure she was hyperventilating. And crying.

We started her breathing into a bag we found. I suggested she try to slow her breathing on purpose. Basically just talked her down from the ledge. She did a wonderful job following instructions and was finally able to calm down. Then she told me her sad story.

She found out just before she swam that they had been disqualified from the 1 st heat. The one they placed 3 rd place in, for points. Disqualified for some kick that she did. Like, she fluttered when she should have dolphin-ed, or vice versa. Whatever.  She felt terrible about that, and then she had the Great Goggle Fiasco of 09 right after, and knew she would be disqualified again. She gave a Herculean effort to catch up, and was so out of breath, and SO trying not to dissolve into the ugly cry, that it all got the best of her. She snowballed right into the hyperventilation, which she had never had the pleasure of experiencing before.

After she explained her tale of woe, she said she was going to try standing. She was a lightheaded, wobbly little Mouse-tine.

We finally walked out of the locker room to the pool area just as the meet was ending. They had replaced her in her final 3 heats. She wanted to go home.

Thank you all for checking up on her, you Guy’s are the best.

No News

I have no good news to share. The Sewer Debacle is not looking promising.

I had a post in my mind about my new watch, but that didn’t go as planned. After I exchange the new watch  later today, perhaps I will have something to tell you.

I was also going to post a picture of Mousey’s swim meet. Honey did get ONE good one, after extensive cropping. But the swim meet ended poorly, and I don’t mean the score. I don’t know if I need to subject you Folks to another sad tale. Of course, Honey with his mad skillz, did actually catch the disaster on film. If we can figure out how to post it, you can see it all go south.

I have also just realized that I am periously close to The Mark. That could possibly be contributing to the feeling of pervasive sadness and general unfairness of life. Sprinkle that with a heavy dose of PMS, and you might want to visit this blob again in about 2 and a 1/2 weeks.

Go read Big Mama and June over at Bye Bye Pie. They usually make me feel better, and are a much better choice at this juncture. Maybe you will like them too.

OK, that’s enough of that.
