“Fitchin’” 09

The Guy’s have been home for a few days, everything is put away, the pictures have been downloaded. Back to life.

They had a great time. I am so glad they enjoy this activity together. It sure takes a load off me.

They caught a lot of fish. Around 150. Of course there was betting involved. I saw the evidence in the visor of the car. Some complicated chart. Honey was out fished, again.

jim 034

29 inch Pike. I had The Boy come in here and give me the stats, because I don’t know the nationalities of fish. And when people give me measurements, I always say “just show me with your hands”.

jim 037

He has added a jacket to his ensemble. Same fitch.

jim 041

Honey’s 21 inch Walleye. You can’t really tell, but that fitch has teeth!

jim 042

Another wally. I HAD to know what was going on in this photo. He said that blue thing on the right was their potty. Nuf said. Just one more reason why I’m glad they like to fish together. That would SO not work for me.

jim 038

The Boy wanted to dive off this cliff. Honey nixed that idea. Have I ever mentioned The Boy gets hurt on trips a lot?

jim 039

They did see the eagle that lived in this eagles nest. That bird needs the blue potty. That’s a messy bird.

jim 048

The good life!

jim 054

More fitch, all walleye. My eyes are starting to glaze over, with all this fish talk.

jim 056

Same fitch. Same glaze.

jim 062

Same fish. But my Guy’s are just so cute!

jim 070

Sink ‘O perch and walleye. No more fish talk.

I am so glad they are home! I missed my FitcherMen!

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jig

Hey Ya’ll! We’re home!!!

I can say that, we’ve been down south.

We had a great time on the first, hopefully  annual, Capri/Bermuda Weekend ! We left for East  Virginia (LOL Warren!) at the crack of dawn on Friday morning, and arrived somewhere around 4 or 5? I don’t know. It was last week, you know. Mrs. Schmenkman (aka Capri Lis) was standing in the driveway waiting for us!

The Capri’s are sisters Patt and Lisa, their sister-in-law Deb, and me, the family crasher. They are so gracious!  We called the second generation, the Bermuda’s, as in shorts, not quite long enough to be Capri’s, get it??? They were Deb’s daughters, Steph and Jackie, and our girls, Ab-Cat and Mousey.

Here we all are on Schmenky’s front porch, that looks out on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Loverly.

022

Just a random sampling of some of the things that went on during these all too brief days. We ate pizza, talked, shopped, talked, sat out on the porch and talked, played cards, talked, played Apples to Apples, ate more and then we talked. Capri Patt and I also talked  for 8 hours there and 8 hours home. I believe ALL of the worlds problems have been ironed out, and I got to know all of these darling Gals even better!

We also got to see the beaver, Paddy Podner, that Schmenky is certified to  rehab. She is getting SO big! And really starting to do beaver-y things. Like building and stuff.

013

We all took turns being Poppet’s pillow. I heart that kitty-witty! Our cats had better look out, I’m going to make one of them be a lap cat, or die trying.

024

I have to stop right here and tell you about the sweet thing Mr. C., Schmenky’s husband did. He built a wheelchair ramp in their garage. I wish I would have taken a picture of it, because that was one awesome gift he made for The Ab-Cat! He is a big old hunk of honey! Thanks Cam, you’re a gem.

We Capri’s will still be going back in October for our annual Capri Weekend Extravaganza. Or as The Boy says, “when you go to hang out with your cougar friends “.

Destination:Virginia, And Not in a Covered Wagon

Seeing as how we didn’t do much in June, and August looks fairly empty, July has been a MADHOUSE!

To cap off the hectic month, Friday morning, the Michigan Capri’s (Deb and Patt and I)  are heading down to Virginia to visit the 4th Capri, Mrs. Schmenkman. Aka Capri Lis.  And this time, we are taking some daughters! Deb’s daughters, Steph and Jackie, and our Girls. Patt’s daughter could not work it out schedule wise. So no Erin :(

It will be a whirlwind weekend. But, a whirlwind chock full of all of the things that I love! Eating, shopping, talking and old friends!

I was thinking about all of the driving that I have been doing lately, and I have had a recurring thought.

Pa Ingalls would have been supremely envious of my van.

It is a great vehicle to travel in. And we all know how he loved to travel.

Now, I know that it might surprise you that I think about Pa Ingalls. But I do. I also think about Ma, Laura, Almanzo, Mary and occasionally Carrie. But not Grace. Oddly, I never think about Grace. Or Rose.

I think about The Ingalls Family regularly.  I often wonder what they would think about this newfangled thing, or how that has fallen by the wayside. Mostly, I wonder what they would think about the life we now lead here in these United States, if they were plopped back here for the week. Wouldn’t that be an interesting conversation to overhear?

All that to say, wouldn’t it be funny to see The Ingalls’  driving across the prairie in my high top conversion van? With the comfy leather seats. Stopping at rest stops to pull out the old spider cooking thing to make up a batch of  jonnycake or corn pone? Crossing rivers using bridges, instead of taking their lives in their hands. Putting their little tin cups in the cupholders.  Watching “I Love Lucy” and “Laverne and Shirley” , “American Idol” and “STAR WARS”  on the DVD and VCR!!!!!!!  I have more thoughts about this. Perhaps I will save them for another  time. You’re welcome.

Thinking about it amuses me enormously!

We’ll be back next week. I’m sure there will be something to tell you all about.

Enjoy the dregs of July. August is coming full speed ahead.

Say “Yes” To South Haven, Michigan.

Hi Guy’s! I’m back! Again!

Some of the Gals from CareGroup went over to a bed and breakfast on Lake Michigan for a little R&R. It was SO relaxing. Have I mentioned that there has not been much relaxing  going on around here lately? I know that I thoroughly enjoyed not having anything to do!

041

Here we are for the requisite “before we leave” picture. From left to right; Philly’s Mom, The Oreo Mom, Three Good Kids, The “Mayor”, Capri Kel and The Peanuts Champ. Do you think I could have found a shorter group of ladies if I tried? Just call me Shaq.

045

On our way across The Mitten, we stopped in Kalamazoo to pick up our friend, Ally, (front left) who is also short.  We spent a lot of time on the porch of the bed and breakfast. I think it’s name was The Sunset Inn.

We played games, shopped, went to the beach, ate, and generally talked nonstop for 3 whole days. It was fun!

We also celebrated The Peanuts Champ’s BIG birthday with a little blueberry pie. She is all about the blueberries.

050

The Sunset Inn at sunset. Or dawn, I can’t remember. Over to the left of the picture, there was a Tiki Hut where you could get breakfast and beverages.  They played Frank Sinatra in the mornings. The whole place was run by a guy called Robert. Or Craig. We never did figure it out. He was from L.A. and was a laid back, free spirit of a fellow. I’m sure he would have posed for a picture, had I  thought to have taken one.

053

We walked across the street to the beach to catch the sunset. We had front row seats! While I have them all lined up like convicts here, I will tell you something about them all. In order.

First is Ally. Of  “Sammon and Ally” fame. That’s what Honey calls her and her husband. Her family was a part of our CareGroup until they moved 4 years ago. We still miss them enormously, so it was especially good to see her! She is a middle school math teacher and her motto in the classroom is “No Blurting”, because it then leads to MORE blurting!! I was most impressed with her will power on this trip. She wins the title of Low Carb Queen, because she was SO good!

Next is The Oreo Mom. She  is a high school Home Ec ( I am sorry, I am aware that they have a different name now, but I am old, so humor me please!) and social studies/history teacher. I tell everyone that she works full time and STILL does more than most people I know when she is not working! By far, the busiest gal I know. She had to get home to prepare for the food pantry that our church hosts once a month. She heads up the kitchen where they serve soup to the recipients, if they want it. Hundreds served monthly!

Third is The “Mayor”. Now this tickled me. She said that is what her out of town sister calls her because she knows and introduces her to everyone in our town! When I thought about it, it’s true! She knows everybody! She works as a pre-school teacher’s helper. She has a lot of  her own kids and is an expert in going many directions at once.

060

Fourth is The Peanuts Champ. We were celebrating her Big 5-0!!! She is also a teacher! A special education teacher, so that ought to tell you a little about her patience, and kindness level. She has been to this B&B before, so she made all of the arrangements for us! She and I were absolutely loving all of the beautiful flowers and gardens we saw over there! She has her own loverly garden right here at home!

Fifth is Three Good Kids. I always knew she entered contests and won prizes, but I had NO idea! She was telling us all about her “stuff” and it was amazing to me! She showed us all of these gift cards to stores and restaurants she had in her wallet. She won her pajama’s in a contest, and they were so cute! She has won an X-Box,  a wireless gaming chair, movie tickets, i-pod shuffle, and endless gift certificates. Since we have been home, she sent me a site to enter a HomeGoods sweep-stake contest! She thought I might like that one. She knows me well!

And last, but not in the picture, is Philly’s Mom. She is our friend still recovering from a stem cell transplant. We were so happy that she was able to join us! She is not a teacher, but works at a school as a social worker. She was quite the trooper, heading down to the beach, checking out the little stores, and playing games til all hours! We are so glad she is on the mend!

I thought it was SO sweet of that boat to glide by, right at the perfect moment! Thank you sailboat, for completing my Kodak moment!

065

The Peanuts Champ commented on the way down that it was nice that we had 6 in the van and everyone was chatting away with their seat partner. While there, we gabbed and shared, and got to know each other even better. I thought perhaps the ride home would be quieter, that the conversation might be tapering off, that some might even nap. That’s how much I know!! The van was buzzing all across the state! We stopped at The Grand Traverse Pie Company, just outside of town, so that the talking and consumption of food could continue!

069

It was a wonderful time, and special thanks to The Peanuts Champ for doing all of the planning! If I were the betting sort, I might predict that this will happen again!

Hopefully, I will be around a little more! Thanks for being patient! Love, Capri “Shaq”

Scenic Sassy

Mrs. Schmenkman is an accomplished gardener.  Not just her yard,  she works at an estate that used to be owned by a world reknowned sculpter and his wife. She has quite a free reign on what she  can do.

But, this is her yard. Every little thing is loverly and inspiring to look at. After my visit there, I mostly feel like I need to come home and get to work. I just loved the colors this year. Plus, who doesn’t just adore a pansy?

047

She has a lot of peonies and irises. Did you know that some peonies smell delicious, and some smell horrid? Pink, good. White, don’t do it.

048

 LOVED these.

049

 And these.

050

 These were delicious as well.

054

So there you have it, our Memorial Weekend Hootenanny Extravaganza ‘09. Thanks for having me Schmenkman’s! I loved my time on The Hill!

Some Sassy Pets

I believe I may have mentioned that Mrs. Schmenkman has some pets. 8 cats, lots of chickens, roosters, turtles, and a baby beaver. And she is a hoof expert for Miracle, the horse next door.

Here are a few shots of some of them. I hope they don’t get their fur and feathers ruffled if they are not pictured. Not all were cooperative, and I never made it down to the chicken coop this year. You have already met my faithful friend Poppet, so she is not featured.

008

This is Kismet. I call him the Lion King. Because he is regal and has a beautimous tail. He is the Lord of this fiefdom.

015

This is Kibbles, who has taken a Dale Carnegie course since I have last visited. Winning friends and influencing others is her game now. She has never been so sweet and friendly. She is taking a nap after catching up on a little light reading.

020

This is Bits. Her fondest desire is for you to throw her jingle stick down the stairs, so she can bring it back to you. She is a Mama’s Girl. She had no use for me.

026

This is Kubota. His goal in life is to be Kismet. He is brother to Kibbles and Bits.

030

Miss Paddy-Cakes, the rescued beaver. She is getting SO big!!! She likey the strawberry.

033

She not likey getting picked up. She whined.

034

This is what child-free couples do with their spare time. Adoption, it’s a wonderful thing.

058

Soaking poor Miracle’s foot. She is prone to abscesses for some reason. The Schmenkman’s are good folk to care for her.

098

We tried for, oh, FOREVER to get a good shot of both of us. With 2 cameras. She asked me to be kind, because she has issues. Maybe she got it, I know I didn’t. So here we are , solo. I had to crop mine. I’m guessing that’s why it’s so big. Really, I don’t think I am superior or anything.

If you could pretend we were next to each other, I would appreciate it.

078

The next post will be a few of the purty things growing around her loverly home.

Have a productive Monday. Because couldn’t we ALL do with a little productivity?

Threads From Sassy Cat Hill

I just realized that threads could be the clothes I bought, as well as the loose strands of information I have to share about this year’s Memorial Weekend Extravaganza. Or as Warren called it, the Hootenanny. Isn’t that a good word?

First of all, I would like to say that I did much better with my weight issue this year. Luggage weight that is. More on body weight later. Last year, I brought a  monster suitcase that all by itself  weighed 15 POUNDS. It was a real  problem. I ended up leaving some of my stuff at Schmenky’s, and she brought it up  to me when they came to Michigan for a wedding in August. This year when I arrived, I had my packed carry on inside my new bigger suitcase that Honey bought for me in Florida. Together they weighed 42 pounds! Well under the 50 allowed by Northwest Airlines!

On the way home, my big suitcase weighed 49 pounds! Who is a most excellent packer? My carry on was full as a tick as well. And the best thing?  I didn’t have to leave anything behind.

Some of my favorite purchases were:

Love this. $3.99 at Tuesday Morning.

032

A whole caboodle of new yarn for delicious scarves!!! The whole bottom of the suitcase was covered ! Around $1.50 each at Big Lots. I have some yummy ones for you, Capri Deb!!!

044

These Born sandals were a big bargain! $23.99 at Ross Dress for Less. I thought my last Born sandals were a deal at $29.99!

046

Let me tell you about my favorite purchase! Schmenky was buying 2 of these at Kohl’s.They were regularly priced at $69.99, on sale for $34.99, and Schmenky had the good fortune to have a 30% off coupon!

But what I really LOVED was my neck didn’t hurt when I slept on it! I have had neck problems since our car accident 13 years ago, and they are getting worse. The pillow helps a great deal!

“By Grapthar’s Hammer, oh what a savings” Galaxy Quest.

042

I heart the pillow! Honey has been trying it out to see if he would like one as well.

I also purchased capris, jeans, various tops, underwear and socks for Honey and the kids, a shower curtain for the guest bath, pretties for the house, and other twinkies for my loved ones.

Now, about those other weight issues. I decided that I was going  to get firm with myself once I got home. Because I am at my all time high fighting weight right now. Except for when I was pregnant with Abby. I gained 70 pounds with her and I never want to see that number on the scale again.

Somewhere around Thanksgiving, I fell off the low carb wagon, and have not really bothered to get back on. I am running to catch up with it right now.

BUT,  Mrs. Schmenkman and I had one last fling with the buffets. We are very selective about the ones we eat at, not all are created equal. Where else can you get a delicious salad, meal, dessert and beverage for 7 bucks? We call all buffets “The Trough”, and we faithfully stampeded on up to it! But after the last slice of pecan pie, that’s it. I’m done with all the eating.

Evidently The Trough is a good place to pick up middle aged women. At least that’s what the GRANDPA MAN, who asked us if we were on Match.com, thought! Seriously, he was a grandpa! O.L.D. M.A.N.    After that, I pointed out all the old men to Schmenky and told her there was her boyfriend.

One last Trough tidbit.

027

Could they possibly need that much butter? Seriously?

Next up? The animals that live on Sassy Cat Hill. There are many. And they are sassy.

Sirius-ly

Schmenky has a new car since I was there last. It is a white Escape, and it is darling. I want one.

With her brand new vehicle, the dealer gave her a year of free Sirius radio. Which is quite the bonus in my book.

We listened to a lot of stations, pop, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and The Blue Collar Comedy Channel. And now you know what sort of things WE find humorous.

We mainly listened to the 70’s and 80’s station. It caused a multitude of of conversations, because, having graduated in 1980, we straddled both those generations.

And that is where Pablo Cruise came in. They used to be everywhere!  When was the last time you heard a Pablo Cruise song? What ever happened to Pablo Cruise? Was Pablo Cruise a person? Do they still tour every summer? Are they in their 70’s?

We also discussed  Three Dog Night, and how they were highly underrated. Because they had a whole slew of hits, and no one ever talks about them. Where would we be without “Joy To The World”, “Black and White”, “Mama Told Me Not to Come”, and my personal favorite, “One”. Those songs were the background to my childhood.

Being from Motown, we are partial to The Supreme’s, and I love Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. I don’t believe that we heard any Smokey. How can that be? NO SMOKEY???

I also realized that I could live the entire rest of my life and  never hear another Eurythmics or Phil Collins song. I’m serious. Entire rest of my  life.

And while you’re at it, add “The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats to that list.

And in closing , I leave you a Deep Thought we heard  from Simon and Garfunkel, another major player from my childhood.

“I am a rock, I am an island. And a rock feels no pain. And an island never cries.”

Someone was having a little pity party.

What song could you happily live your life without ever hearing again?

Helllllllo Poppet

The Schmenkman’s have many cats. 5 in the house and 3 outside. They all have their charms and  quirky sweetness. As all cats do.

Meet Poppet. My new best friend. She is by far the friendliest Schmenkman cat. She gives new meaning to the name lap cat.

019

If I was sitting, she was on my lap. She likes to be patted, hard. You could use another word, one that starts with SP, but I am not going to use it. Because then search engines send me undesirables. It rhymes with “hanking”. She is a rare “hanking” kitty.

023

She is very particular as to how she wants you to sit. This is the only way. According to her. She stretches, and then naps.

063

It looks like Schmenky took this one mid “hank”.

041

I love Miss Pop-Pop.

Tomorrow I am going to share some details from my trip. I know you are on the edge of your seats. I’ll give you a little teaser:  Pablo Cruise.

Way Back When-sday- Mousey’s First Visit to Mrs. Schmenkman’s

I think I may have mentioned that the first 2 times that I went to Mrs. Schmenkman’s house, I took Mousey with me. The first time, she was 9 months old, and the second time she was 21 months. She was an AngelBaby.

At that time, The Schmenkman’s lived in Greensboro N. C., and they had a hammock.

IMG_0001 (4)

I love that little grin on her face!

I am home now, Honey came and got me from the airport at 9:30 last night. We had another great Memorial Day Weekend Extravaganza, and I will tell you all about it in the days to come. In the mean time, you will just have to make due with the angelic face of Mousey-lina, enjoying the hammock.

Swing on over to Capri Deb’s to see more Way Back When-sdays. Join us!!
