“Usama Hussein” is Dead

Honey is back to work, Mousey is back to school, and I am back to whatever it is I do. Vacation is over. BIG sigh.

Before I get into all of the vacation talk, and the sharing of pictures, I need to tell you something.

Usama bin Laden is dead.

You probably already knew that, but what I wanted to tell you was something that young Mousey said 10 and 1/2 years ago. Mousey was 7 years old when 911 happened. Suffice to say, her little mind did not understand, at all, what was going on. She saw some of the coverage on tv, heard us talking, and then made some conclusions of her own.

When we prayed for the rescuers to find survivors in the rubble, she prayed that they would find them “under the Liberty”. Because she had seen the Statue of Liberty in much of the coverage. I guess we watched a lot of coverage, because shortly after, we went to a coney island that had a television and she said, “Oh look Mama, they’re playing your show!”

But one thing she said affected her life over the years. She vowed she would never fly in a plane until they caught “Usama Hussein”.

Before last week, she had only flown once, about 2 or 3 years after her declaration, and she was a little bit of a wreck. She cried for about the first 15-20 minutes of that flight, and was then fine for the rest of it and the return trip. But she still said she didn’t like to fly.

We really felt that she needed to face this fear. Someday, she might want to travel with others. I didn’t feel it was fair to send her off with unknowing youth leaders, or others, with the little disclaimer of Oh, by the way, she is going to get a tad bit hysterical for the first 15-20 minutes or so. Just thought I’d throw that out there.

When Honey first mentioned flying down to Florida, she reminded us she didn’t like to fly. Like we had forgotten. We said we knew that, but it was something she was going to have to face, and we would rather she face it with us, rather than foisting it on some poor, unknowing, soul. She accepted that we were flying, and then never wanted to speak of it again.

She was nervous the morning we left, and after we boarded the plane she asked that we not talk to her during takeoff until after the plane was well into the air. I held her hand, gave her kleenex, and prayed for her while she quietly cried for 15-20 minutes. Then she was fine.

When I reminded her of her “Usama Hussein” comment 10 years before, she said that wasn’t it, she just didn’t like taking off. But I knew that the whole issue started 10 and 1/2 years ago, with a little girl who heard some horrible things about planes, death, and loss, and really bad men, and the unspeakable things that humans can do to each other in the name of God.

Well Little Mouse, they are both gone now. Fly FREE!

How about something beautiful? Ah yes, palm trees!

Well this blog brought me to tears. I so understand her fear and it is so touching that you held her hand and prayed; that is true MOTHER LOVE.
So glad God took care of that evil man!
Loved your Florida pictures. It would be great if we could go there once a month huh? I have been missing it for 9 weeks.

Helping Mousey through this is a gift she will always remember, a model for summoning up courage in the future. Your palm tree photos are so inspiring…really love the angles and the proporations and the blue sky!

I just went to Las Vegas with a 30 year old man who had never flown before. Although he didn’t out right cry, he was a bit of a wreck. Lots of people are not fond of flying…so it’s cool Mousey!
