Way Back When-sday Hodgepodge

Hello People! Time for The Hodgepodge. Thanks, as always, to Joyce From the Other Side of the Pond for hosting this gala!

1. What is something about living in this country that you value? ‘This country’ is whatever country you call home.

One thing that I value, but has not always been evident lately, is the ability to pull together for a common good. The expression “united we stand, divided we fall” is very appropriate. It was very apparent during WW2, and has poked it’s head up on many occasions since.

Doing the right thing for the right reason has always been an important aspect  for our nation. Unfortunately, over many years, people and their agendas have caused division. Self sacrifice is not in fashion. We do what is best for us and don’t give thought to how it could harm others. While some would say that change is good, much has not been good. It takes an event, or a catastrophe to make us come together and put aside our differences. When it does happen, it’s a beautiful thing!

2. What is a favorite something you own that is red, white, and/or blue?

I am sorry, but I can’t think of one thing. I will say my blue jeans, and that’s kind of lame.

3. Do you fly a flag at your house on patriotic holidays?

Usually, we have a lovely flag flying in the front yard. I love it!

Unfortunately, the flag pole has been lying in pieces by the side of the house since the Sewer Debacle of 2010. Soon my Friends, very soon, she will be flying again.

4. What ingredients do you think should be included in a great picnic basket?

Honey and I were telling The Girls that the closest thing we ever came to a picnic was when we went to the drive-in when we used to live in Windsor, Ontario. It was called Dusk to Dawn and they had them over holiday weekends.

We had very specific things that we needed to eat. Egg rolls from Chan’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Twix bars, chips, licorice for Honey, and Diet Coke. I’m sure there were other things, but that is all I’m remembering. Sort of like a picnic…in the car!

The Kids and I also had picnics out in the backyard all the time too. Their favorite was eating on top of the playscape. It was standard lunch fare. PB&J.

5. What is one interesting piece of trivia you know? Interesting is of course a relative term.

I am the QUEEN of useless information! If you play a trivia type game, you are going to want me on your team!

I can tell you almost anything you might want to know about The Beatles, as a group OR individually. I don’t know why I can remember all of those facts, but cannot remember something REALLY IMPORTANT I was supposed to do yesterday!

Since Mrs. Schmenkman is currently raising another baby beaver, I will share a lesser known tidbit that I learned while she was parenting her last baby beaver. Baby beavers can only go potty when in the water. You are welcome.

6. Wednesday, May 24th is National Escargot day…have you ever tried them? Eww or ooh?

No thank you, I have an unadventurous palate.

7. What is one thing you know for sure?

Romans 8:38-39 (New International Version)

38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And for that, I am thankful.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I mentioned last week that Honey jumped through some pretty big hoops to be able to come and live in the United States in 1987. He became a citizen on April 20, 1995. He had to take a big test beforehand. I learned a few things while helping him study! All Americans ought to be able to answer those questions!

It was the day after the Oklahoma City bombing, and getting into the city county building was our first experience with the sort of screening you might undergo at airports today. Metal detectors, pat downs, x-ray machines looking into purses and bags, taking everything out of your pockets. I remember my Dad had his usual Swiss Army knife in his pocket, he had to run it back out to the car. It was a hint of what was to come after 9-11.

Here is Honey being sworn in, with a little Ab-Cat in the corner.

I dressed the kids in red, white and blue, so THEY are my favorite things in those colors!! I’m pretty sure Honey dressed himself.

Abby was 6, The Boy was 3 1/2, Mousey was 8 months, and Honey was then a 38 year old AMERICAN!!!!!!!

Happy Memorial Day!

Very cool! . I used to have a dress that I loved; it was 2-piece and it was white with a red and blue band across the square neck. It had a white jacket. I hung onto that dress for years after it didn’t fit 😦 hoping I could someday fit back into it.

Loved the pictures of your honey getting sworn in. I wish my family had taken pictures of my swearing in. Instead, I have only memories. Congrats!!
