Girlfriend is a College Graduate!

We had a little celebration this weekend! The Ab-Cat graduated from college!!!!!!!

She has been going since the fall of 2007. She started with on line classes because she had major back surgery the summer before, and then another surgery a couple of months later. That one involved two long leg casts for 6-8 weeks, so she wasn’t exactly able to get out and about. She persevered throughout the following year with 2-3 days of physical therapy and doctor appointments sprinkled in.

All this information looks neat and tidy in a small paragraph, but I can’t even begin to tell you what an ordeal this all was for her. That back surgery was gruesome. In a 10-12 hour operation they removed the old spinal fusion that she’d had since the accident when she was six. Chipped it out because bone had covered it, which is a good thing unless it needs to be removed. They then installed new rods that went from T-12 down through her sacrum, longer than her previous fusion, to correct the lordosis she had developed.

Lordosis

Lordosis is an increased curving of the spine.

For your medical information.

After a 2 week, excruciatingly painful, hospital stay, she came home with her straight spine and turtle shell orthotic to recover. Both surgeries required her to be cared for in ways that other 18 year olds would bitterly complain about. Not her. That one is no whiner. And you know what? Girlfriend just started doing life again. She just rolls with it. Literally and figuratively. When I grow up I want to have the strength and determination that Abby has!

The next fall, she actually went to the college campus! She was like a postman, she went in cold, rain, heat and snow, or whatever that slogan says. She did well, better than well, it said on her final report card she graduated with honors!

We went to one of her favorite restaurants, P.F. Changs, to celebrate her achievement!

011

We are so proud of her. Nothing has come easy for her in this life.

012

She worked hard, she persevered through adversity.

013

And Michigan winters!

014

We are so happy for her success!

016

She is SO happy to be DONE!!!!!!!

Not one but THREE diplomas! WOO HOO AB-CAT!!! Much love to you!

Jeremiah 29:11

New International Version (NIV)

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord,

Way to go! I know only the story that you have told us here but truly, Abby and your family are an inspiration. I don’t say that flippantly either. You folks seem to hold together like glue through ups and downs and truly celebrate each other in a special way…well done Abby and all of you!
