The Vaca Recap

No one has a To Do LIST?

It would appear that all is running like a well oiled machine on your end. Well, good for you, I aspire to that life.

We are only a week or so into the daylight savings business and MAN, I am already weary of the darkness. I am hopeful that walking with Keelyody will happen when regularly scheduled instead of being pushed back because of lack of light. So there’s that.

When Mrs. Schmenkman and I toiled at the salon, some 23 years ago, we worked until 8 on a couple nights a week. It always felt like we worked all the live long night when it became dark at five!

Honey came home from vacation eight pounds heavier than when he left. This did not bode well for his Monday Night Weigh In with Fuzzy and Farmer Mark at work last night. After two days of eating little more than barely anything and air, he still weighed in at three pounds over. He tried.

Although he was STARVING, he managed to watch many episodes of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives last night. The only thing I can say about that is It was making ME hungry and I DID eat dinner. I hope he weighed in as soon as he got there so he could eat his lunch!

He is chipping away at his LIST. I think he was able to cross a few things off yesterday. I know I did. Laundry done and put away, always a huge chore after a trip.

I finally downloaded all 12of my vacation pictures. I carried that camera everywhere we went, but neglected to take any pictures. I could have showed you our scrumtrulescent chicken pot pies! Or The cute animal and other shapes that our maid fashioned with our bath towels. Or all the British people baking down by the pool every day. The British sure do love the sun. They just lay there, doing nothing all day. If I was not reading, I could not be there, ALL DAY.

Our favorite British couple, Dos Equis, The Most Interesting Man In The World, in his speedo,

and Mrs. Bean, in her bikini.

They were endlessly fascinating.  She didn’t really look like Mr. Bean, Honey just thought there was something Bean-ish about her nostrils and her mouth. I thought she was a very attractive older woman with her adorable, short grey hairdo. I was thankful that we never had lounge chairs close to them though, because she talked non stop and I was struck, more than once, by the fact that her lounge listener was getting an uneven tan because she was facing her the entire time.

I read three books while gone. I read All Over But The Shoutin’ by Rick Bragg for the majority of the trip. It was so good, but not an easy read. I loved it though and want to loan it to my Uncle Bob so we can talk about it. I think he would find some common ground with Mr. Bragg.

The First Dawn by Judith Miller is a commitment book, I know there are 2 more. This one was primarily about freed blacks heading west to settle in Kansas. I guess the town, Nicodemus, is still in existence today.  I have never read her before, and she was fine, but I had never read about this subject matter before and found it interesting.

I actually started The Lost Choice by Andy Andrews on the plane and finished it on Monday. This fellow knows how to tell a story! Parts were set in the past, some in the present, all woven together in a very enjoyable way. I did think he was overly concerned with telling us that the present day stories were partaking of pots coffee, but other than that I thoroughly loved it. He has other books as well and I will be looking forward to reading them all.

Here are the pictures from our trip. All random and…. a motley assortment.

Ft Myers Pier

007

Pelican at Ft Myers Pier. This fellow was a poser!

008

Other bird at Ft Myers Pier.

010

Sunset at Ft Myers Pier.

011

After sunset at Ft Myers Pier.

014

Honey at Ft Myers Pier.

016

Boat at Tin City in Naples. Honey was very impressed with these motors. I do not, nor am I mentally able to understand, why. One good thing about that day? We can put Tin City on the list of Thing I Never Need To Do Again. And also the list Why Did I Feel We Needed To Do That?

017

Big house being built. I think the thought was we could go back next time and see the finished project. Of course I have no idea on God’s green earth where this house is now so clearly, my plan was flawed.

019

The last day towel was a cute little doggie. My favorite was the graceful swans. Why didn’t I take a picture of them? Do they send you to towel design class before they hire you? What if you cannot master the art of towel origami, do they not hire you? These are the kinds of things I want to know.

Well, there you have it, pictures from the vaca. Told you they were random.

Run to your library and get Rick Bragg’s book, “Ava’s Man”, one of my favorites. I promise, you will laugh and cry at the same time. His writings are such an emotional roller coaster. Glad your back!
